Southwest La Plata Library District INTERIM Library Director

Job Description:
Under the direction of the Southwest La Plata Library District Board of Trustees, the Interim Library Director will be responsible for guiding the development of the framework for core library district operations, financial practices, and policies. EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Bachelor’s Degree required; related master’s degree/MLIS/MLS preferred.  Five years library experience, demonstrating an increasing level of responsibility required; experience in professional library management and administrative positions preferred.  Experience in budgeting, public library finance, and applicable federal and state law preferred.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
Ability and strong desire to meet and serve the community needs
Ability to work independently, organize and prioritize work, respond to varied and changing work demands and to make decisions as required
Ability to establish and maintain positive working relationships
Ability to foster and maintain positive public image for the library district
Ability to understand, develop, interpret and enact library policies, rules and procedures and to make policy recommendations to the library board
Ability to prepare comprehensive reports and present ideas clearly and concisely in written and oral form
Knowledge and skill in the use of computers, the internet, and library software systems
A comprehensive knowledge of library techniques, practices, services and procedures as they apply to public library administration

Posting for the Southwest La Plata Library District Interim Director

The Southwest La Plata Library District is seeking a part-time, contract employee to serve in the position of Interim Library Director.  This position requires 10 flexible hours per week, beginning March 2, 2020, pay scale to be determined.  Expected length of employment is between 6 and 24 months.

Duties include administrative supervision of staff, including work performance standards and staff development; project direction, including programming for adults and children, special events, the Colorado Collaborative Summer Literacy Program, and other programs and projects that may arise; library functions, including public outreach, collection development, collaboration with Durango School District 9R; financial activities, including preparing financial statements, and overseeing grant applications; and other routine and non-routine situations, including managing complaints from the public.  Travel between the two library branches is required.  The Interim Library Director will carry out the policies of the Board of Trustees, and will act as an advisor to the Board of Trustees, recommend needed policies, and will also assist in the search for a permanent Library Director. 

A qualified candidate must have a bachelor’s degree, an MLS/MLIS or master’s degree is preferred.  Candidate must also have a minimum of five years library experience, demonstrating an increasing level of responsibility.  Also necessary is the thorough knowledge of the principles and practices of public library functions, strong human relations and communication skills, proficient use of computers and library technology, and the ability to make decisions in an environment of limited resources.

Southwest La Plata Library District, Library Branch Manager

Job Description:
Under the direction of the Southwest La Plata Library Director, the Branch Manager will, work with other Southwest La Plata Library District staff, The Friends of the Southwest La Plata Library District, and Durango School District 9R personnel. 
The Branch Manager will perform related duties as required by the Library Director, including planning, training and supervising volunteers and substitute library clerks, among others.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
A Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university is required. At least three years of increasingly responsible library experience is desired.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
Knowledge of current public service principles, practices and methods,
Operational characteristics of library equipment and tools,
Current trends in library services,
Principles and procedures of record keeping and timely report writing.

Sunnyside and Fort Lewis Mesa Public Libraries

The Southwest La Plata Library District is seeking a 30hr/wk employee to serve in the position of Branch Manager, at Sunnyside and Fort Lewis Mesa Public Libraries.  These positions will beginning July 1, 2020. Pay scale to be determined.  It is expected that this position will become a full-time position by 2021.

Each library’s branch manager coordinates and performs library services for the branch.  Responsibilities include patron services, circulation services, maintaining the library, compiling monthly statistics, assisting the library director with collection development, and overseeing special events at the branch.

Under the direction of the Southwest La Plata Library Director, the Library Clerk Substitute will be responsible for assisting library patrons.

The Library Clerk Substitute, in the absence of the Branch Manager, will provide assistance to library patrons in finding and selecting library materials, will assist patrons in the use of library equipment, will provide proactive, friendly service to customers, and will provide a safe and welcoming environment for library patrons, including maintaining an orderly appearance of the library.
